You know your strengths. So why are you still STUCK?

THE STRENGTHS LETTER

(YOUR WEEKLY NOTE FROM ANGELINE)

Hi Reader,

I've been thinking about something lately.

As a marketer for coaches, I work with incredibly self-aware people who have a deep understanding of their talents and strengths. They've done the work to understand what makes them tick (in a good way).

Yet when I speak with coaches who run their own businesses, here are the three things I see tripping them up most often:

  1. Self-promotion
  2. Marketing and selling
  3. Charging what they're worth

This fascinates me because if we understand our strengths deeply, why do these things still get in the way? (Personally, I want to know too!)

What came to mind was a program I took part in 2 years ago—Positive Intelligence. It was where I first heard about Saboteurs and Sages, the negative and positive voices in our heads that influence our behaviors.

When I heard Dr. Cheryl Lovell had been using Positive Intelligence alongside CliftonStrengths®, I asked her to share more.

Here's what I learned from Dr. Cheryl:

1) Our awareness of talents and strengths doesn't automatically translate into action. Clients understand their strengths, but they often struggle with how to approach, deal with, or contain the negative expression of a strength. The result is that the overuse of a strength becomes a handicap or an inhibitor.

2) It can be hard to proactively control our more dominant talents. Clients are often great at identifying the overuse in retrospect, but lack a way to monitor and gauge their behavior proactively.

3) Sustainable behavior change requires mental fitness. Awareness (such as knowing our talents) only accounts for 20%, and the other 80% comes from building mental muscles.

This is where Positive Intelligence comes in.

Dr. Cheryl combines both approaches. She uses CliftonStrengths as the foundation to help individuals learn what's right with them. Then she adds PQ to refine their ability to effectively use those strengths.

Here's how I see it:

CliftonStrengths helps us understand our talents and strengths.

Positive Intelligence helps us build mental fitness. It's like going to the gym for our brain: you build “muscles” that let you shift from Saboteur to Sage more quickly and reliably.

Reader, if you're a coach or speaker wanting to grow your business through speaking, think about which saboteur might be stopping you from putting yourself out there so you can be more visible, or what's holding you back from emailing and staying in touch with prospects.
