Why your client follow-up actually helps (and not bugs) them

THE STRENGTHS LETTER

(YOUR WEEKLY NOTE FROM ANGELINE)

Hello Reader!

I hear this all the time from coaches: "I don't want to bug my past clients."

After your workshops, your training, your clients don't hear from you again.

You send one follow-up: "Thank you for working together, best of luck in your Strengths journey." Then you go your separate ways.

And here's what happens: two things die at the same time.

☠️ Your clients forget what they learned about their CliftonStrengths.
☠️ And they forget you.

A year later when they need training again, they hire someone else. Not because you weren't good enough, but because your name didn't come to mind.

A "Meta-Moment":

Last month, Gallup held a CliftonStrengths coaches call about designing permanence systems—ways for coaches to help clients keep their Strengths top of mind long after the coaching ends.

The whole session was about creating reminders and touchpoints so Strengths don't fade.

And that's when the "meta-moment" hit me!

💡 Every permanence system you design for your clients is also a follow-up system for your business. 💡

Hit the pause button and let that sink in.

When you help your clients remember their Strengths, they remember YOU too.

This is the exact reframe on why it's not about being pushy. You're helping your clients keep using what they learned. Without regular touchpoints, everything you workshopped together just slips away. That would be such a waste.

Here's how I look at it:

The problem isn't that you're "bugging people" by staying in touch, but rather, what happens when you don't stay in touch.

When clients forget their Strengths:

  • They stop being able to leverage their Strengths in daily work
  • They lose the ability to see how Strengths shape their success.
  • They may have completely forgotten what their top Strengths even are.

When clients forget you:

  • You inadvertently put the burden on them to remember how to find you.
  • They have to figure out if you even offer what they need next.
  • They end up hiring another coach that showed up more recently in their inbox.
Staying connected isn't about YOU. It's about making it easier for THEM.

The system that does double duty:

A great "permanence" system for coaches? → A weekly email newsletter.

  1. It serves your clients and your business at the same time.
  2. It's the one channel you control (unlike social media algorithm)
  3. It positions you as their go-to resource.

In fact, I'm working with a client to kick off the new year doing exactly this—a newsletter series to help his clients keep CliftonStrengths in existence after the intro workshops.

Let's work together!

If you want to explore newsletters for your coaching business, I can help in two ways:
