What "I'm an introvert" taught me about excuses

THE STRENGTHS LETTER

(YOUR WEEKLY NOTE FROM ANGELINE)

Hey Reader,

If you're new here, welcome! In this newsletter, I help coaches and speakers create systems for nurturing leads and turning audiences into clients.

Let's get started!

I almost introduced myself as an introvert at a networking event last week.

The words were already forming: "Hi, I'm Angeline. I'm an introvert so I get nervous introducing myself..."

But I caught myself. That label wasn't helping me. It was protecting me from being who I want to be.

So instead I said: "I'm Angeline Soon—you know, like 'as soon as possible'—but actually I'm a recovering overthinker."

People laughed. They remembered me. And I didn't hide behind "introvert" as an excuse.

Here's what I realized: The labels we give ourselves limit our actions.

"I'm an introvert" became my reason not to speak up, not to share ideas, not to fully participate.

It wasn't serving me. It was holding me back.

I see the same thing happen with newsletters.

Coaches tell me they hesitate to start a newsletter because it feels "spammy" or "icky" or "pushy."

But here's the question: What if you stopped calling it spammy and started calling it educational, or full of tips?

What if your newsletter was:

  • That recipe hot tip that saves someone's dinner
  • Sharing one phrase that diffuses a tense work argument
  • An acronym that helps them remember an important concept

It's YOUR newsletter. You have full control over how your voice shows up.

The label you give it—spammy or helpful, pushy or generous—becomes your reality.

Just like "I'm an introvert" kept me small. Just like "I don't want to be annoying" keeps you from sending out newsletters.

The brain believes what you tell it. So what are you telling yourself about showing up?

🤔 • 🤔 • 🤔

Another way to think about this 👉

When you choose the "I don't want to be annoying" label and skip the newsletter, who actually benefits?

Not you. Not your potential clients either.

Because here's what really happens:

💔 You don't have a newsletter, so you hope your past clients or future prospects remember you. You're putting the onus on them.

💔 You hope they can dig out your info after 3 years when they need training again. You're putting the onus on them.

💔 They somehow need to figure out if you provide service for this next thing they want. Again, the burden is on them.

If you're a coach or speaker wanting to grow your business through speaking, think about:

  1. Reframing your newsletter from "annoying" to "helpful resource" that keeps you accessible
  2. Understanding that staying connected isn't bugging people—it's making it easier for them to find you when they're ready
  3. Recognizing that email is the one channel where you control the relationship, not an algorithm

If you're ready to release the "spammy" label and start your newsletter, I'm running a workshop in November.

My Build Your First Newsletter Workshop is open for enrollment

I'm opening enrollment for my November workshop. This time, I've added 4 Sprint Clinics - extra support to help you send your newsletter before Dec 31.

→ Two 60-minute live workshops
→ Nov 11 and Nov 13 // 4-5pm US Central Time

Sprint Clinics:
→ Four 60-minute clinics for your most urgent questions

This isn't a self-paced course. You will actually be doing the work with me there to guide you through the technical steps and answer questions.

If you've been telling yourself newsletters are "too spammy" or "I don't want to bother people," this workshop will help you release that limiting belief and replace it with a system that serves your audience.
