How a coach grew her list not the salesy way

Last Friday, I was up bright and early for an 8am meetup at a coffeehouse in midtown St. Louis. The host—a coach—is getting a group of St. Louisans together to "shoot the sh|t" about AI.

When I walked in, I found a small group gathered at the corner, mid-introduction. The coach handed me a letter-sized paper printed with her conversation starters.

Simple yet incredibly useful to have. I loved her thoughtful gesture.

As she was explaining how the morning would go, she said, "I'm planning on doing more of these. Would you be interested?"

Of course many of us nodded. She'd just brought a bunch of strangers who have something in common together.

Then she held up the conversation starter and pointed to the QR code, "Scan here and leave your email so we can stay in touch and I'll let you know when the next one is."

Many of us took our phones out to scan the QR code.

Just like that, she grew her email list.

Here's why it worked: she created something we all wanted and let us in for free. By the time she asked for emails, we had already experienced something good, and were happy to reciprocate. Saying yes to giving my email felt like a natural next step.

That's the principle underneath it all. Give first. Ask second.

What to say to get more yes

When you're ready to try this, here's how to increase your chances of getting a YES.

Before the gathering ends, while you still have everyone's attention, ask a question tied specifically to what just happened in the room. Something like:

"Would you like to continue being part of this group and discuss how to use AI in your business?"

Tweak the example above and make it specific to your topic. The more it mirrors what they just experienced, the better.

When you get the YES, follow with: "I have a QR code here. Scan it, enter your email, and I'll keep you posted on the next one."

There's research behind why this works.

Persuasion research shows that when someone first says yes to a small, meaningful request, they are more likely to agree to the next step because they want to stay consistent with their earlier yes.

👉🏼 If you need help setting up the QR code, landing page, and automated email confirmation, that's something I can help with.

Three ways we can work together:

  1. Newsletter ghostwriting – I write your weekly or monthly newsletter in your voice. You share ideas, I handle everything else (strategy, writing, scheduling). Perfect if you have tons of ideas but translating them into consistent emails feels impossible.
  2. Educational email series – I turn your workshop or program into a 5-email nurture series that educates leads and moves them toward booking with you. One-time deliverable that works for you forever.
  3. Newsletter setup workshop – I set up your QR code, opt-in landing page, and automated email confirmation so your next event becomes a list-building opportunity. You show up and speak. I handle the system that captures who was in the room.

Not sure which you need? → Book a 30-min discovery call with me.

P.S. I'm looking to organize an April meetup with CliftonStrengths coaches in Singapore 🇸🇬 and Kuala Lumpur 🇲🇾. If that's you or you know someone, hit reply and let me know!

May your strengths be with you always,

Angeline Soon
